From serving nearly 700 shoppers to closed and now back again, The New Free Store, previously The Free Store, has had quite a ride. It didn’t take the previous Free Store long to grow into a pillar in the lives of many Marquette area community members, growing by 300 shoppers in 2015 alone. But after the devastating closure of their umbrella 501(c)3, those community members had to abruptly go without the free items provided such as toothpaste, shampoo, laundry detergent, toilet paper, diapers, wipes, clothes, shoes, jackets, linens and more! Volunteers and shoppers used to enjoy a simple meal together during openings and many shoppers volunteered their time and energy to help the store run. Other community resources were shared as well. Truly a destination of outreach, friendship, and acceptance. A place where everyone had something to offer.

The good news is shoppers won’t have to wait much longer. Since the closure in January 2016, volunteers have been working diligently to bring The New Free Store to Marquette. Now a federally recognized non-profit with the backing of many community members, organizations, and grants, the NFS is looking for store space to set up their generous amounts of donations. “We have two garages and a storage unit full of contributions already.” says Chair Jacquilyn Otis “Now we need someone to come forward with a building space to house us.” They aren’t looking for a huge space, minimum 1500 sq feet. “It is essential that our space be handicap accessible, including parking and bathroom.”

Don’t have a space, but want to help? The NFS is also looking for representatives from churches and service organizations to serve on their board of directors to bring in diverse growth and development plans as well as additional volunteers. Members of Thrivent Financial can direct Thrivent monies to the NFS as well as give themselves by contacting their advisor. A list of item donations can be found at “At The New Free Store we say that in God’s economy, there’s always enough.” says Secretary Andrea Wash. “There is a surplus in the world. Our goal is to help distribute it.” The NFS can be contacted at [email protected] or 906-362-FREE
